Daniel Arcus Incus Ululat Higgs

Daniel Arcus Incus Ululat Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of Daniel Higgs the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime.

Higgs is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity.

In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. On Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot, Higgs weaves meditative, casually ruptured drones using acoustic and electric guitar, upright pianos, banjo and jew’s harp, recorded entirely at home on cassette recorder. He pairs the music with a series of paintings that call to mind religious iconography passed through the disfiguring surrealism of Miro.

Happy Birthday
Keith!

Keith Haring's work has meant a lot to me
for different reasons over the years.
His squiggles, spray painted linework, and the
ability to bring art out of the gallery and into the streets where
everyone could participate continues to make me smile.

The urgency of his message & art;
and his zest for living are great reminders that life is short. ...

In the words of David Bowie,
and as a tribute to Keith....

let's dance!

"Let's dance put on your red shoes
and dance the blues
Let's dance to the song they're playin' on the radio
Let's dance for fear your grace should fall
Let's dance for fear tonight is all"

the pop up shop!
before there were 5 million pop up shops!

In April 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in Soho selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. Haring considered the shop to be an extension of his work and painted the entire interior of the store in an abstract black on white mural, creating a striking and unique retail environment. The shop was intended to allow people greater access to his work, which was now readily available on products at a low cost. The shop received criticism from many in the art world, however Haring remained committed to his desire to make his artwork available to as wide an audience as possible, and received strong support for his project from friends, fans and mentors including Andy Warhol.

"So doing, he left, as legacy,
the collapse of so-called out
and so-called in,
so-called high
and so-called low,
into mysterious ecstasy and reemergence.

This roda's for you, dear Keith."

John Orth, of Holopaw.

Part 5 and 6 . Pink Flamingo and Cypress Knees
see all parts here...

5. Pink Flamingo

I was certain I never needed a pink flamingo in the yard.
But this particular flamingo with its sun beaten pink paint accented with dripping black enamel and a splinted neck that makes it seem as weary as the joke it has become, made me think otherwise.

6. Cypress Knees

The cypress knees are props left over from a video my boyfriend shot last summer. The action has me and our friend Jeff McMullen, clad in black wetsuits, wandering the tangled woods of Central Florida in search of each other. The shoot had us wading into icy springfed ponds on moonless nights. The roar of cicadas, tree frogs and a 50 amp generator filled the air.
The long drives back into town tested the limits of "too much whisky"
and too many sad Will Oldham songs.

"In a desolate wintery snowscape, there is evidence of an injury, provoking a slow transmutation that passes from the aggressor to the wounded."

This is a video created for John's band, Holopaw. (All in the middle of an especially sweltering Florida summer.) The song is "Curious" from their second album
Quit +/or Fight on Subpop Records.

"I’m no more a musician than I’m a photographer, filmmaker or writer, although I work in each of those fields. For me, the medium of expression is almost interchangeable – that photograph, that song, that poem – they’re all saying the same thing. "

from TLOBF here.

Richard Skelton is an artist from Lancashire in the UK. He started his Sustain-Release Private Press in 2005 as a commemorative tribute to his late wife Louise, with the intention of publishing her artwork alongside his own musical offerings. Since its inception he has released a slew of raw, beautiful recordings presented in lovingly-assembled, individualised editions.

It is with A Broken Consort, perhaps, that Skelton most-assuredly draws these elements together, creating an ever-changing drift of rich textures and interleaved melody that effortlessly evokes the landscapes which inspired it. Box Of Birch, his second album in this guise, was originally published in a boxed edition that contained, among other things, birch twigs collected from the West Pennine Moors. For Skelton these things act as a synecdoche for the landscape itself, a physical connection to the places in which much of his music is recorded. In this new edition for Tompkins Square, Skelton has created an exclusive series of artworks which draw on the hidden histories of the English landscape, and their narratives of displacement and loss. The result is something which perfectly complements the music whilst adding another dimension, providing a fuller picture of the artist’s vision.

"I started Sustain-Release as a commemorative tribute to my late wife, Louise, who died in 2004. She was a talented artist, and bequeathed me a legacy in the form of her sketchbooks. The idea for a posthumous collaboration – a blend of my music and her artwork – was the driving force behind setting up the label. The adoption of pseudonyms reflects this collaborative nature of the work, by not identifying me as the sole author."

"Push me back into a tree
Bind my buttons with salt
Fill my long ears with bees
Braying 'please, please, please,
Oh you ought not!
No you ought not!'

And then this system of strings
Tugs on the tip of my wings
Cut from cardboard and old magazines
Makes me warble and rise like a sparrow"

"And in the place where i stood
Is a circle of wood
A quarter to which you chop and you stack in your barrow"

"Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh desire
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh desire
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh desire milkymoon

From the top of the flight
Of the wide white stairs
Through the rest of my life
Do you wait for me there?"

"I wasn't born of a whistle
Or milked from a thistle at twilight
No, i was all horns and thorns
Sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright
So enough of this terror we deserve to know light
And grow evermore lighter and lighter
You would have seen me through
But i could not undo that desire"

(nicky kehoe)

In the trough of the waves
Which are pawing like dogs
Between pale-faced and grave
As i write in my log
And then i hear a noise from the hull
Seven days out to sea
And it is the damnable bell
And it tolls, i believe, that it tolls
It tolls for me!
And it tolls for me!

lyrics by the sadly missed, life without buildings.
watch them here.

"Life Without Buildings was a Glasgow, Scotland based indie rock band. The band, mostly ex-students of the Glasgow School of Art, formed during the summer of 1999. The band initially consisted of Will Bradley (drums), Chris Evans (bass) and Robert Johnston (guitar). Painter Sue Tompkins (vocals) joined later that year. Sue's "talk-sung" vocals eventually became the band's most famous attribute. Impressed after their first London gig, the Rough Trade-affiliated Tugboat label asked the band to record a debut single on the label."

Because there's a million ways to go
You know that there are....

"You know, at one time, I used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries.
But I decided that this was an idea way before its time.
Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing...
oh my, how the world still dearly loves a cage."

- Maude

"You can do what you want
The opportunity's on
And if you can find a new way
You can do it today
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
You see ah ah ah
Its easy ah ah ah
You only need to know
Well if you want to say yes, say yes
And if you want to say no, say no
'cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are...

talbot & deru. genus. special edition cd
dear oh dear records. oh!one
music composed and produced by joby talbot & benjamin wynn

genus is an electro-acoustic score for wayne mcgregor's ballet of the same title, based on charles darwin's discovery of evolution. the musical composition in eight parts is a collaborational work between joby talbot and deru. talbot has a high profile as a film and tv composer. screen credits include cult television comedy series ‘the league of gentlemen’ and ‘the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy’. deru is benjamin wynn, an electronic music producer from los angeles. his music is best described as an amalgamation of hip-hop, electronica and idm. genus embodies a synergy and culmination of various musical influences. minimal music and 20th century compositional textures performed by a ten part choir and four string instruments establish a perfect symbiosis with deru's complex electronic patterns. indescribably beautiful and haunting, the music is delivered with intensity and artistry and can be enjoyed as a self-contained work, even if there is no opportunity to view the ballet.

No, I never thought I would see today
So I thank you for just being so damn

You are so excellent
You saved me from a rainy day
And melted all the clouds in the sky
Yes, I always wished it could be this good
So I thank you for just being so damn

Waiting for our sunny day
Living your life but always in mine
Thank you for just being so damn

The Sónar Festival, with confirmed dates of 17, 18 and 19 June,

Sónar 2010 presents its image - a journey to the end of the world along the Way of St. James. For the first time in its history, Sónar, the International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art, will be split between two venues.
As part of the Xacobeo Jubilee Year, Sónar travels along the Way of Saint James, and will take place simultaneously in A Coruña and Barcelona.
As a result, there will be a double helping of Sónar,
the annual Barcelona festival and this one-off event, which will be called Sónar Galicia.

"Eastbound", by Ola Podrida.

"Big city calling, I hear the echo outside
There's something so frightening in the deep western sky
I wish it was simple saying goodbye

Will cracks in the pavement bring me some sort of truth
Will they find some way to remind me of you
Will the train running eastbound help me remember my part
Will the wish for release fill the holes in my heart
The sky filled with phantoms in their towers of light
And lovers so restless give themselves to the night
If you cut me wide open and you looked deep inside
Would you find something deeper than this worrying mind?"

Syd Barrett

"Perhaps it was the drugs. Barrett's intake at the time was suitably fearsome, while many considered his metabalism for such chemicals to be a trifle fragile. Certainly they only tended towards a further tipping of the psyche-scales, but it would be far too easy to write Barrett off as some hapless acid amputee - even though certain folks now claim that a two-month sojourn in Richmond with a couple suitably named "Mad Sue" and "Mad Jock" had him drinking a cup of tea each morning which was unknown to Syd, spiked with a heavy dosage of acid.

Such activity can, of course, lead to a certain degree of breain-damage, but I fear one has to stride manfully blindfolded into a rather more Freudian landscape, leading us to the opinion of many of the people I talked to who claimed that Syd's dilemma stretched back to certain childhood traumas.

The youngest of a family of eight, heavily affected by the sudden death of his father when Syd was twelve years old, spoilt by a strong-willed omther who may or may not have imposed a strange distinction between the dictates of fantasy and reality - each connection forms a patch-work quilt like set-up of insinuations and potential cause-and-effect mechanisms.

"Everyone is supposed to have fun when they're young - I don't know why, but I never did" - Barrett talking in an interview to *Rolling Stone*, Autumn 1971"

"Something’s going on, a change is taking place
Children smiling in the street have gone without a trace
This street used to be full, it used to make me smile
And now it seems that everyone is walking single file
And many hand their heads in shame
That used to hold them high
And those that used to say hello
Simply pass you by

Think for a minute, stop for a minute
Think for a minute, stop for a minute"
