"
I found myself drawn to minimalism, and more specifically to the West Coast finish-fetish guys, like John McCracken and Billy Al Bengston. A lot of those guys around that time were in one way or another influenced by car culture, either in the formation of their work—such as Richard Prince’s shields—or in the tools that they used to create it, as in Bengston’s sprayed auto-paint works. All that stuff just got me started obsessing, I suppose."

Todosomething are some of the most talented guys I know. I met them through mutual friends, and eventually came to know their work, and appreciated how they approached their craft. A merge of conceptual art and beautiful woodworking, is there anything better?

In addition to working as an interior designer, I've started writing for my favorite design publications, such as Apartamento, Freunde von Freuden, Yatzer, and now Sight Unseen. I am lucky to be connected with these design publications & editors, as well as being invited into so many amazing studios here in L.A., such as Todosomething. - David John

Read my latest story on Todosomething for Sight Unseen.

"Todosomething is a Los Angeles–based design and fabrication studio that specializes in custom furniture and cabinetry with precise, exquisite finishes and subdued color palettes. But in the last few years, as their studio has grown, partners Chad Petersen and Dakota Witzenburg have begun producing their own products as well, which are extensions of their minimal design aesthetic—the ’60s-inflected, powder-coated metal (S)tool, the paint-tipped plywood A(+) Chair, a scorched-pine slab table with spindly steel legs. Between the two practices, which overlap in more than just appearance, they’ve cultivated a reputation as representatives of a certain Modern American style, one influenced by everything from Sol Lewitt to Shaker furniture."

"My sculptural work explored the body’s relationship to objects and spaces. A lot of it had to do with my own size. I’m rather tall (6’5”), and standard doors can be a problem if I’m not paying attention. Tables and chairs don’t seem to work either. I started making my own furniture and objects to deal with these things out of necessity, though I noticed that they could really be Frankenstein-type objects and wouldn’t always work for other people. I think I’ve always paid particular attention to the relationships between things and it’s become an obsession that I’ve honed into a career."

images from Dakota Witzenberg's kitchen....

Last weekend at the COLLECTED Magazine launch here in Los Angeles, I bumped into todosomething, aka, Dakota Witzenberg and Chad Petersen. I'd met them briefly about a year ago when they were part of one of SPECIFIC's mindmelting group shows. That night I kinda became fixated on their LP cabinet, imagining some crazy glitched out jazz- psychedelic bebop record spinning round and round in their cabinet.

Oh the parties I could have with that cabinet!

The above images are from Dakota's kitchen here in Los Angeles that is featured in the latest issue of Collected. The matte finish, the good ole geometry, and the black tiles really whispers, "perfect kitchen." Dakota mentioned he had chickens, I think named Julia, Rebecca, and Monica perhaps? (sorry if I got their names wrong!).

I smell buttermilk biscuits, right?

Their studio is right down the street from YHBHS here in downtown, and I'm hoping, though I haven't even asked, to walk down to their studio and chat further... In the meantime, take a look at their homes in Collected, and todosomething just relaunched their whole website with some amazing new work on it.... go check it out....

(go here..)

Last nite at the opening of a fantastic group show at SPECIFIC MERCHANDISE on Beverly Boulevard, I saw some new pieces by todosomething, a local furniture designer and workshop. TD(s) is located in downtown Los Angeles, not too far away from where I live.

We were super impressed by the AV cabinets and turntable stations. The one in the show, (similar to the one above) makes me want to find a space in my small house to start playing records again. The pieces are heavy enough so your records don't drop the beat, or skip if your company decided an impromptu dance off....... Genevieve, are you listening:)?

Remember when records and cassettes were objects? When the first song on the second side had an actual meaning! When you would waste hours on your bed or sofa, drooling over the art work, while scouring the liner notes for hidden meanings.....
Well, these pieces take me back to that time, except better.

Go check out this new work! Also some really intriguing sculptures
by Sean Brian Macdonald, made out of found wood and latex. tiny monuments perhaps.

PLAY: SUSANNA MAING & TODOSOMETHING
Opening Reception Saturday, June 5, 5-8 PM
Exhibition dates: June 5, 2010 - July 2, 2010

Brooks Hudson Thomas is pleased to announce his second exhibition of new work by emerging artists and designers at his new project space, SPECIFIC. What will become an important new chair design (and dozens of variations of it) by Chad Petersen and Dakota Witzenburg, the team behind TODOSOMETHING, is being shown for the first time with new paintings by Los Angeles artist Susanna Maing.

Susanna Maing, honored with a solo exhibition at Angles Gallery in Santa Monica in 2006, has been in the studio developing her practice and SPECIFIC is proud to be the first to show her new body of work. Maing and TODOSOMETHING are both working hard at play in their endeavors and we think you should keep your eyes on their very bright futures.

SPECIFIC is the new project space curated by Brooks Hudson Thomas. Operating in the gap that exists between a shop and a gallery, SPECIFIC is passionate about exhibiting contemporary design and contemporary art together in a way that has never been seen in Los Angeles.
