I've been stopping by AMSTERDAM MODERN more and more often these days. Their selection of lighting + furniture + store design is a big PLUS to the east side here in Los Angeles. I've never been to their warehouse in Van Nuys, but hoping to go in the upcoming month to see their new shipment from Holland.

They joined forces with
Mohawk General Store, (read their blog), which used to occupy a small store in the heart of Echo Park. Clothing, printed goods, and vintage stereo components. They now commune pretty perfectly.

Good things take time, and this store(s) was worth the wait.
And if you aren't local, then keep up with the AMSTERDAM MODERN blog.

"Amsterdam Modern offers mid century and vintage furniture, lighting and other household goodies. Our inventory is shipped directly from Amsterdam and arrives from all corners of Holland."

What we have made is real
We are in Xanadu.....!

Yesterday, I stopped into SPECIFIC on Beverly Boulevard here in Los Angeles only to witness Brooks in the midst of setting up XANADU. (Sorry Brooks for chatting your ear off while you were setting up!)
He has gathered 50 artists for his Holiday XANADU show that is opening tonight. From the looks of all the work he showed me, this is a show not to be missed.

is a unique store in Los Angeles, and personally, one of the best. If you haven't been, this is the perfect introduction to Brooks' vision. How he pulls off so much in so little time is beyond me. For those that read YHBHS regularly, I posted images from the SPECIFIC event I attended in Joshua Tree with Von Tundra. For those that missed that event hosted at Andrea Zittel's property two months ago, I'm sorry, b/c it was too fun! You can take a peak here off of her site...

See you there tonight.

Do we stand in the calm center of this hurricane of modern life,
or do we step into its turbulence?

Exploring themes of urban isolation and emotional alienation, "House" is a slow moving film that plays with memory and temporality.

1. Doug Aitken, House, Regen Projects, opening Nov 11, Los Angeles
2. Old House, via Galerie Half, on Melrose, Los Angeles, California. If you haven't been, you need to run to Galerie Half. Truly, one of the more inspiring stores in Los Angeles.

"House" depicts a couple stoically seated at a table in a residential home. Facing one another, their gaze locked, debris and fragments of the house fall around them. The two protagonists remain untouched as the house crumbles and disappears, leaving only the demarcation of its shape in an empty lot that fades in the closing scene.

Throughout the film, the apparatus of destruction is never shown. These devices become part of the film's expanded narrative, implicating what happens outside the framed image. "House" is exhibited as an installation shown on double monitors set in the midst of rubble and detritus. The spectator views the film surrounded by remains, becoming immersed in the fragments of what was once a home.
