Interiors Now! Volume 2

(here)
(I'm heading for the beach tomorrow with a stack of new books and magazines)

"Periods in the past are very much linked to distinctive prevailing tastes. The early 20th century was dominated by Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, the 1920s and 1930s by Art Deco, and the 1990s by pared-down minimalism typified by the likes of Christian Liaigre and John Pawson. In many ways, the first decade of the 21st century saw a reaction to the latter. We have witnessed the return of pattern and wallpaper.

We have re-embraced a certain exuberance and rejected the mono-style “total look”. Instead, pieces from different periods and vernaculars are combined and juxtaposed. Another trend has been the development of “design as art”—one-off or limited-edition creations produced by galleries that sell for astronomical sums..."

I love California; EVERYTHING is so ARTIFICIAL.

California Design:
The Legacy of the West Coast Craft and Style

"The furniture, jewelry, recreational objects, ceramics, fabric arts, and other designs that emerged from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s California would come to identify its outdoorsy, eccentric, sometimes entirely funky persona."

"The furniture, jewelry, recreational objects, ceramics, fabric arts, and other designs that emerged from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s California would come to identify its outdoorsy, eccentric, sometimes entirely funky persona. And the best of these were exhibited, sometimes idolized, through a series of popular shows at the Pasadena Art Museum.

California Design is a detailed retrospective of these exhibitions and the West Coast style they epitomized, replete with hundreds of innovative photographs showcasing the works in all their original glory. Signature works from Charles & Ray Eames, Tropi-Cal, Don Chadwick (co-creator of the Aeron chair), and many other designers and studios illustrate twenty years of style that was as diverse as it was pioneering. "

Jo Lauria is an independent curator of decorative arts and the author of several books. She lives in Los Angeles. Suzanne Baizerman is Curator of Crafts and Decorative Arts at the Oakland Museum of California. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

artist, London
"It's such a simplistic statement that it's almost embarrassing to admit, but every time I look at it, I can't help thinking about the people 500... 2000 years ago who sat down and made these objects, with their hands and their knowledge, and with such skill and such elegance."

Two Thousand Years of Oriental Ceramics

India Carpenter writes: "It was quite an easy choice to be honest. It's a big book. The shelf it lives on is pretty rickety. I know it's going to cause an accident and I will be the victim. But, in the meantime this is what I have to say about it........

My book is Two Thousand Years of Oriental Ceramics printed in 1961 by Thames and Hudson.

It lives within easy reach on a shelf above my desk in my studio. It's an exquisite and epic book, thick heavy pages full of large black and white prints and beautiful hand mounted colour plates.

The objects in this book really do blow me away. Each piece, without exception has been created with such immense skill and refinement. They are quite intense objects, just beautiful and full of soul. It's such a simplistic statement that it's almost embarrassing to admit, but every time I look at it I can't help thinking about the people 500... 2000 years ago who sat down and made these objects, with their hands and their knowledge and with such skill and such elegance. It's pretty wondrous. I find it enormously inspiring."
