"I tend to treat this pair of books as companion pieces, usually to the delight and horror of the house guest who discovers them on the coffee table. Both were found at the same thrift store and their complementary titles created an exciting diptych on the bookshelf.
I have since assumed that one needed a guide to The Sexually Transmitted Diseases if one was a resident of the homes featured in Underground Interiors, Decorating for Alternate Lifestyles. The altered interior is the focus of both, altered home interiors or bodily interiors, where the norm has been subjugated by some sort of exterior intervention.
They speak of outsiders, adventurers, thrill seekers, those on the edges moving beyond safety and comfort into realms of the unexplored. It seems to me that these books most adeptly illustrate how experimentation can be both thrilling, and on occasion, result in unforeseen consequences of the itchy kind.
Shag rugs and gonorrhea.
Pleather curtains and syphilis. .
Macrame and herpes.
The lesson?
Trends, like diseases, come and go. Herpes and clean lines are forever.
These books both repulse and intrigue, educate and disturb, unnerve and excite. It is in that dichotomy that I find the most pleasure while flipping through them over and over and over and over and over......
