2. billy bengston, 1963
"Billy Al Bengston is an LA icon. A pioneer artist fascinated with "low-brow" Angeleno culture -- including a car culture and sports iconography -- he was among the first to eschew traditional painting in favor of spray paint, found canvases, and industrial technique.
Half a century ago Bengston launched his artistic career at the Ferus Gallery on La Cienaga, a small compressed space which sparked the careers of Andy Warhol, Wallace Berman and Larry Bell, and shaped Los Angeles' identity as a center of contemporary art. The show featured Bengston's early essential image studies which focus on innate symbolism framed by rigid geometry and vivid color, an approach the artist has been taking ever since."
